Jimmy Carter makes rare public appearance at his wife's memorial

The Carters were the longest-married U.S. presidential couple, having wed in 1946 when he was 21 and she was 18. On November 28 in Atlanta, Jimmy Carter, the 99-year-old ex-president of the United States, made a poignant appearance at his wife Rosalynn Carter's memorial service. Rosalynn, who passed away on November 19, was a significant figure during Jimmy Carter's 1977-1981 presidency and in their joint humanitarian efforts post-presidency. She was 96. Despite being in hospice care since February, Jimmy Carter, looking fragile, attended the service in a wheelchair, dressed elegantly in a dark suit. He was assisted to a front-row seat beside Rosalynn's casket, adorned with flowers. He carried a special blue-and-white blanket with his wife's portrait, a testament to their 77-year marriage. At the Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church, Jimmy Carter remained silent throughout the service. His son, James Earl "Chip" Carter III, paid homage to Rosalynn, referring to her as the family's unifying force. Chip affectionately kissed his father's forehead after his tribute.
